The heating up of the national market for so-called startups has proven to be an interesting factor for industry experts to analyze. According to a report published by Portal Exame, the topic was discussed by analysts at an event recently held in the capital of São Paulo; Campus Empreendedorismo.
The SEBRAE Technical Director, Carlos Alberto dos Santos, was one of the guests and stated, according to the article, that although there is still a lot of fanfare surrounding startups, it is important to harness the creative energy of these nascent companies for the generation of new models on entrepreneurship. “A good idea and a good invention can remain just that if they don't have a business model for their development,” warned the director.
The professor at the School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM), Gil Giardelli; another participant in the debate mentioned by Exame.Com, emphasizes that the fact that Brazilian companies are attracting the attention of international investors should be leveraged to create a national startup model. “We are copying a lot of what comes from abroad. It's time for us to pay attention to different ways of doing business in Brazil,” said Giardelli in the article.
For Marcelo Pimenta, entrepreneurship curator at Campus Party 2012, the entrepreneurial potential of these new companies may force large corporations to change their business models as an adaptation effort. This vision is shared by Fábio Seixas, who participated in the debate mentioned in the report, bringing the case of his company, Camiseteria; a successful e-commerce startup. “Startups test business models all the time. This format needs to be adapted for companies, in innovation and product/process development hubs,” said the entrepreneur, according to Portal Exame.
At the close of the debate, Gil Giardelli, who is also CEO of Gaia Creative, a digital marketing company, expressed optimism, believing that Brazil can occupy a leading position in a corporate context where technology is a raw material: “We have to take advantage of this Brazil that is dreaming and develop the creative economy, the networked society, and invite global entrepreneurship to participate in this transformation.”.
